#PLN

PLN...Personal Learning Network. A network that can be created to connect with colleagues like-minded individuals, and a place to find resources that will help you in your career - whatever it may be. A PLN can be very closely tied with one's digital space when it all gets mapped out!

So many things are involved in PLNs. Oftentimes, starting with a Twitter account can be a great gateway into creating your own PLN. Upon creating a Twitter account, attending webinars or adding your thoughts and ideas in live chats, starting your own personal blog while following and commenting on others' blogs are ways to start cultivating your PLN. Below is a great visual for what you can do to get involved in a PLN for yourself.

A PLN can be local, global, or even national. Twitter is one of those platforms for PLNs that help to make this happen! Personally, I have never gotten on that Twitter bandwagon. I actually try to reduce my "web-footprint" and tweeting didn't really click for me. However, I did create a Twitter account for the purpose of our EDU 776 course and here is how things went...

My Twitter handle - @BeekNatalie - was not by choice. I didn't even realize that it had created that name or handle for me! Anyways, after getting the hang of entering in hashtags to find Twitter accounts to follow, I did enjoy checking out what was out there in the nutrition realm. There was A LOT! Ones that stuck out to me in particular for the purpose of nutrition education (and subsequently decided to follow): @Psych_of_Eating, @TeamNutrition, @TuftsNutrition, @eatright, @TodaysDietitian, and more. Some fun ones that I chose to follow were @mckelhill, a nutritionist focused on the science behind living a healthy, whole-foods focused lifestyle, and @FoodieChats

Today's Dietitian had some great articles that I felt were closely tied into this course. For example, one article that I retweeted was focused on how to communicate nutrition research to your clients, patients, students, in a way that is understandable and usable for those without that nutrition expertise. Feel free to read @TodayDietitians' article below:

Now joining in on a live Twitter chat was a whole other ballgame. I did attempt to join a few, but had a lot of difficulty. In the end, I didn't get the chance to jump into a live chat. I did review one from earlier in the month that I found interesting. #DietitiansDoPrevention was a live chat facilitated by @EmmaCarderRD. This was through the Association of UK Dietitians. After browsing through the archive, it looked like Emma shared a document with those participating that contained the chat's questions: rdukchat.com/chats/ . After those involved introduced themselves, tweets started pouring in answering various questions and replying to one another. Had I been able to join in, I feel I would have answered question number one: What does a ‘prevention based approach’ mean to you? @BeekNatalie: "To me, taking a prevention-based approach to nutrition means being proactive. It is assessing the risks a patient might be at, and helping to facilitate change towards a healthy lifestyle that can help either manage or eliminate signs or symptoms. #DietitiansDoPrevention."

My hope is that with some practice, I'll be able to join in on a live Twitter chat in the near future and hopefully expand my own personal learning network!

Have you started your PLN? If so, where can I find you on Twitter?! Tweet on! 😃
