Social Media - Some of the Younger Generation May be Lacking in this Area
I chose to read and review the article 5 Social Media Skills Millennials Lack. I am not a millennial myself, but article piqued my interest. Why? I feel there are times when I see things pop up on Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat, etc. by those in that "millennial" generation and question how they thought that post could be helpful to them down the road.
William Ward, a professor of social media at Syracuse University had a very funny - but valid - comment quoted in this article, “Because somebody grows up being a social media native, it doesn’t make them an expert in using social media at work. That’s like saying, ‘I grew up with a fax machine, so that makes me an expert in business."

This gave me a chuckle, but also rang true!
So what exactly were those 5 social media skills millennials lack? Well...
1) Knowing when to hit the bleep button
2) Using social media to actually save time
3) Understanding how to crunch the numbers
4) Mastering the multi-network shuffle
5) Networking professionally on social media
Out of these 5 points, the one that stuck out to me the most was point number 2. Typically we think of social media as a time-suck rather than time-saver. However, a "McKinsey report notes that social media has the potential to save companies $1.3 trillion, largely owing to improvements in intra-office collaboration. Internal social networks like Yammer enable employees to form virtual work groups and communicate on message boards." The article continued to discuss the back and forth emails that go on, and how posting in and replying to a continuous stream can be more time saving. While I get this - at work, the email situation is very prevalent - I don't know if this would save me (or co-workers time) as much as it would just turn into a back and forth chit chat with co-workers. Something to think about for sure!
Which point sticks out to you? Why?
